Why is it that Australians are passionate about foreign human rights matters, demonstrate and pontificate on things that barely touch them. Yet we have in this country 500,000 Australians that suffered at the hands of various churches and faith-based groups that betrayed trust on such a scale that it is hard to comprehend.
The Royal Commission into the abuse of children has handed down its finding and we pussyfoot about regarding all kinds of causes that impact on other people all over the world. Often places that have not been visited nor are there any connections that would explain the passion expended. Then I see the lack of passion, the lack of interest displayed by political leaders, the platitudes proffered by religious leaders. The blame shifting, the soft sell and bamboozle. The hollow comments about 'sexual abuse'! Offers to reflect and take this more seriously. More bamboozle that is taken seriously. When it comes to sexual abuse of children, the word 'abuse' does not adequately reflect the realities of child rape and other acts committed on a scale that if it were happening elsewhere, our human rights activists would be waving flags!
Why this selective passion? Why this silence? AK
Child protection can not take place in our current adversarial legal processes in our court environments.
